Mac Driver For Hp Laserjet 1000

I have a rather old HP LaserJet 1000 which I have been using with Windows XP up until recently. I switched to a MacBook Pro that runs Snow Leopard. However when I hooked up the printer via its USB interface I wasn't able to see it as an available printer. After doing some digging I find that it may not be one of the supported printers in Snow Leopard. HP was not very helpful either. I don't have MacOS listed in their support page for that printer.
My question is: has anyone been able to use the same printer with Snow Leopard?

Of course, the HP LaserJet 1000 IS NOT a color printer, and is possibly getting confused by the coding coming from the driver that is telling it to print in color (if that's how it works). My switch to iMac has gone really smoothly, with the Migration assistant doing a great job. But connecting the printer did not automatically produce any wizard for installation. In the general list of drivers there´s only one for HPLaserjet, and it seemed to be accepted.
When printing a page, though, I am informed that the text cannot be sent from the machine to the printer, and that´s as far as I get. HP´s home pages do not offer any alternative drives as far as I can see.
My printer is a few years old, but functions perfectly, and I find it difficult to believe that should´t continue to work for me...
